Conjugate distributions are probability distributions from a family of distributions, such that if the prior distribution belongs to the family, then for any sample size and any observations, the posterior distribution also belongs to the family.  Usually each distribution in the family can be specified by one or two parameters, so only these parameters need to be kept track of during probabilistic inference, which is particularly convenient.
